A Christmas Mosaic 2

Christmas Mosaic 2 was produced with the generous help of many people especially from the various embassies.  Twenty-two countries participated in sharing their Christmas music and spirit for this CD.  In each case the Embassy staff were a delight to work with.  We thank them profusely for their time and effort during this project.

Christmas Mosaic 2 continues to explore the differences and similarities of peoples’ images and feelings of the Christmas experience.  We hope that this exploration will lead to a greater appreciation of the effect that the Christ story has had on peoples’ lives.  While some songs show the poverty of Jesus, (Jesus Christ S’ Habille En Pauvre) others speak of the shepherds and how the this birth expresses their hopes for man. (Kommt All Herein).

Proceeds from the sale of Christmas Mosaic 2 will be going to UNICEF.

The SONGS:

The countries featured in this CD are many and varied, twenty-two in all.  In each case the Embassy staff concerned were a delight to work with.  I must thank them profusely for their time and effort during this project.  Due to the number of songs and languages covered on this CD, it is beyond our scope to give a verbatim translation of all the songs.  In some cases, a direct translation would be inappropriate as the intended meaning of the song would not be conveyed.

2. Nesem Vam Noviny (Czech Republic)
Sung by Leo and Giacomo Trottier
Arranged by Gabor Finta

Nesem vám noviny is an old song from the 15th or 16th century

Nesem vám noviny poslouchejte,
z betlémské krajiny, pozor dejte, slyšte je pilné a neomylné,
slyšte je pilne a neomylne, rozjimejte.

Syna porodila cistá pana,
v jeslicky vlozila Krista Pána.
Jej ovinula a zavinula,
Jej ovinula a zavinula,
plencickama.

K nemuzto andelé s nebe prisli,
i také pastýri jsou se sesli,
jeho vítali, jeho chválili,
dary nesli.

Andel Páne jim to sám prikázal,
kdyz se jim na poušti všem ukázal:
K Betlému jíti neprodlévati,
K Betlému jíti neprodlévati,
hned prikázal.

Ejhle, pri Kristovu narození
stal se div veliký v okamzení:
nebo noc tmavá se promenila,
nebo noc tmavá se promenila,
v svetlo denní.

Listen we hare bringing you the news
Pay attention, we bring you news from Bethlehem
Listen well and make no mistakes.

Pure virgin gave birth to a baby boy,
And she plays with the baby Jesus in the manger
and she wrapped him in swaddling clothes.

The angels descended from heaven and
shepherds gathered to welcome Him.
They praised Him and they brought Him gifts.

Angel of God told them to go quickly to Bethlehem,
When he appeared to them in the desert.

At Christ’s birth the great miracle happened in an instant,
and the dark night changed to day.

 11. Sus In Poarta Raiului (Romania) “Up At Heavens Gates”
Sung by Leo and Giacomo Trottier
Arranged by Gábor Finta
Traditional song

The very simple traditions in Romania are reflected in their songs. The children go door to door with their message of hope – to be rewarded with sweets and nuts. Here, the offer of money would be regarded as an insult. In this song Maria sits with a weeping Jesus, up at the gates of heaven. She comforts him with the fact that he will have the gift of all gifts, he will become the Prince of the Heavens.

Sade Maica Domnului…

C-un fuit micut in brate…

Fiul plînge, stare nare…

Tace, fiule, nu mai plînge…

Ca moi duce, tioi aduce…

Doua mere, doua pere…

Toate patru aurele…

Si cheita de la rai…

Sa te faci mai mare crai…

Üle lume lagedale viib meid rõõmus jõulutee.

Tee viib orust mägedele üle külmetanud vee.

Olgem rõõmsad, velled hellad,

Helisegu jõulukellad lumerikkal talveteel!

Uhke kuuse tuppa toome jõulurõõmuks lastele.

Lõbusama tuju loome,

jõulu tuju kõigile.

Särab kuusk ja särab tuba,

lapsed rõõmsad kuuse ees.

Kuulge, kuulge tuleb juba, laste sõber jõulumees!

 14. Barn Jesus 1 Krybbe Laa (Denmark) “Jesus in a Manger Born”
Sung by Giacomo Trottier
Arranged by Gábor Finta
Song by Hans Christian Andersen, 1859

Baby Jesus lay in a manger

though Heaven belonged to Him.

His pillow was made of hay and straw and darkness surrounded His bed.

But the Star shone above the stable as the oxen kissed the foot of the child.

Glory to baby Jesus!

Every soul in sorrow finds joy and happiness.

Shake off the heavy burden of pain

for a child is born in the town of David to comfort every heart.

To the child we will give in, and become as children in soul and mind.

Glory to baby Jesus!

Barn Jesus i en krybbe laa,

skjønt himlen var hans eie;

Men stjernen over huset stod, og oksen kyssed barnets fod, halleluja, halleluja, barn Jesus!

halleluja, halleluja, barn Jesus!

 15. Jesus Christ S’Habille En Pauvre (France) “Jesus Dresses In Poor Man’s Clothing”
Sung by Leo Trottier
Arranged by Gábor Finta

This song tells the story of a husband and wife who act very differently when asked for charity.  When Jesus asks the wife for help, she gives a clean bed.  However, when Jesus asks the husband for scraps of food He is turned away with nothing.  The lady is rewarded for her generosity of spirit by a place in Heaven, while the husband is punished for his lack of charity by being sent to Hell.

Ils me rapportent des lièvres,

toi, tu ne m’apportes rien.

Belle dame à la fenêtre,

faites-moi la charité

Ah, montez, montez pauvre homme,

avec moi vous souperez!

Quand ils quittérent la table,

il demande à se coucher.

Ah montez, montez pauvre homme,

un lit frais vous trouveréz!

Or comme ils montaint les marches

trois anges les éclairaient:

Ah, N’ayez pas peur, Madame,

c’est la lune qui paraît!

Dans trois jours vous serez morte,

enparadis vous irez,

mais votre mari, Madame,

en enfer ira brûler!

 18. The Snowman (Canada)
Sung by Leo and Giacomo Trottier
Music by Gábor Finta, Words by Marian Douglas(1842-1913)

Look how the clouds are flying south!

The wind pipes loud and shrill!

And high above the white drifts stands

The snowman on the hill.

Blow, wild wind from the icy north!

Here’s one who will not fear

To feel thy coldest touch,

Or shrink thy loudest blast to hear!

Proud triumph of the school-boy’s skill!

Far rather would I be

A winter giant, ruling o’er

A frosty realm, like thee.

And stand a-midst the drifted snow,

Like thee a thing a-part,

Than be a man who walks with men

but has a frozen heart!

Let’s run and listen to the baby Jesus, today is Christmas day, come all you Wise Men and adore the King of the sky.

Sung by Leo and Giacomo Trottier

Traditional Hungarian Carol

The first verse of this song talks of the angels coming down from heaven where they see the shepherds going to Bethlehem. In the second verse, the shepherds find out that their Saviour is born in a manger. The final verse describes Mary beside her son while He is in the crib among the sheep.

Mennyböl az angyal lejött hazzátok, pásztorok, pásztorok!

Hogy Betlehembe sietve menvén lássátok, lássátok.

Istennek fia, aki született jászolban, jászolban,

Ö lészen néktek üdözitötök valóban, valóban.

Mellette vagyon az édesanyja Mária, Mária, barmok közt fekszik, jászolban nyugszik szent fia, szent fia.
